ALEXANDRA JUNCTION
Urban Planning / Urban Design
Melbourne, Australia
Urban design is concerned with the shaping of public space at multiple spatial scales from lanes, streets and squares to the neighborhoods and districts of the larger metropolis.
Through a series of site visits, interviews, research, and analysis, we proposed a group of guidelines, objectives, and recommendations with the goal of transforming Alexandra Junction, in the neighborhood of Fitzroy, into a green innovative gathering place that will accommodate the diversity and uniqueness of Fitzroy, and will become a link between the vibrant centers of the surrounding commercial streets. This by providing higher density and more sustainable mixed-use developments offering affordable housing, and by providing a more sustainable transportation network, improving the connectivity and accessibility of pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure, helping provide a better gathering space that heightens the local arts and activities of the area, ultimately promoting a sense of belonging among residents.
