GLORIETA ETIOPíA
Urban Planning / Urban Design
Mexico City, Mexico
Located in the Narvarte Neighborhood in Mexico City, the Glorieta Etiopia serves as an important transport hub connecting a subway line, two BRT lines, several buses, and shared bike stations along a busy mixed-use corridor. The transfers between these transportation systems happen in the public space. The link between transportation systems and the public space should be thought as vital in city planning, but in many cases due to a lack of proper planning there has been a notable deterioration in quality of life and environmental systems in the urban context. This study explores different approaches of improving multimodal transportation hubs through planning and design to create a group of recommendations for a feasible approach to improving potential multimodal hubs.
The specific objectives of this study are as follows:
Through a literature review, identify issues that affect most public transportation users in different contexts and assess how these issues impact ridership. Analyze the impact of biking and pedestrianization around multimodal transportation hubs and how an effective design can benefit and increase ridership among current and potential users.
Through interviews with experts, identify principles for improving multimodal transportation hubs and establish categories that integrate some of the best practices.
Describe the Mexico City case study – Glorieta de Etiopía – identify and analyze the existing street and public transportation conditions.
Develop recommendations for planning, design, and implementation of transportation improvements in the case study of Glorieta de Etiopía.
